Wegovy Pill vs Injection
The first oral GLP-1 for weight management is here. How does it compare?
On December 22, 2025, the FDA approved the Wegovy pill — the first oral GLP-1 medication for weight loss. Both the pill and injection contain semaglutide. Here's what the clinical data shows about each formulation.
One Drug. Two Ways to Take It.
Both the Wegovy pill and Wegovy injection contain the same active ingredient — semaglutide. The difference is in how it's delivered: a daily pill you swallow, or a weekly injection you administer. Clinical trials show comparable weight loss results with both formulations.

What the TrialsActually Show
The Wegovy pill and injection were studied in separate clinical trials with different participant populations. While the results are similar, they cannot be directly compared head-to-head.
OASIS 4 Trial

STEP 1 Trial
Published in The New England Journal of Medicine, February 2021. Wilding JPH, Batterham RL, et al. DOI: 10.1056/NEJMoa2032183
Important: These trials had different participant populations, different sample sizes, and slightly different durations. Results cannot be directly compared. Novo Nordisk states that “the weight loss achieved with the Wegovy pill is similar to that of injectable Wegovy.” Your healthcare provider can help you understand what these results may mean for you.
Practical DifferencesThat Matter Daily
Daily vs Weekly
The pill is taken once every day. The injection is given once every week. Some people prefer the simplicity of a weekly injection; others prefer avoiding needles entirely with a daily pill.
Storage & Travel
The Wegovy pill does not need refrigeration — a significant convenience for travel and daily life. The injection must be stored at 36-46°F and requires cold storage when traveling.
Morning Routine
The pill must be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, then you must wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications. The injection has no such restrictions.
No Needles
For people with needle anxiety or injection site discomfort, the pill eliminates that barrier entirely. No injection site rotation to manage, no pen devices to learn.
Cost Considerations
Novo Nordisk launched the pill's starting dose at ~$149/month through savings offers. Costs for both formulations vary widely based on insurance and available programs. Check with your pharmacy and insurance provider.
Switching Between Forms
According to Novo Nordisk, some patients on the injection may be able to switch to the pill. This requires stopping the injection and waiting one week before starting the pill. Always work with your prescribing doctor for any medication changes.
Wegovy HD (7.2mg Injection)
In March 2026, the FDA also approved Wegovy HD — a higher-dose 7.2mg injection for adults. This provides an additional injectable option with the potential for greater weight loss than the standard 2.4mg dose. The safety profile is consistent with existing semaglutide data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the Wegovy pill and injection
Is the Wegovy pill as effective as the injection?
Clinical trials show comparable results. The OASIS 4 trial showed 16.6% average weight loss with the pill (among adherent participants over 64 weeks), while the STEP 1 trial showed approximately 14.9% with the injection (over 68 weeks). However, these were separate trials and cannot be directly compared. Novo Nordisk states the pill delivers "similar" weight loss to the injection.
When was the Wegovy pill FDA-approved?
The Wegovy pill was FDA-approved on December 22, 2025. It became the first oral GLP-1 medication approved for weight management. It launched in US pharmacies in early January 2026.
How much does the Wegovy pill cost?
The starting dose launched at approximately $149 per month through Novo Nordisk savings offers. Costs vary significantly based on insurance coverage, pharmacy, and available savings programs. Contact your pharmacy and insurance provider for your specific cost.
Can you switch from the Wegovy injection to the pill?
According to the manufacturer, some patients on Wegovy injection 2.4mg may be able to switch to the pill after stopping the injection and waiting one week. Any medication changes should be managed by your prescribing healthcare provider.
How do you take the Wegovy pill?
Take once daily on an empty stomach with a small sip of water (no more than 4 ounces). Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications. This ensures proper absorption. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions.
Does the Wegovy pill need to be refrigerated?
No. Unlike the injection, the Wegovy pill does not require refrigeration, making it more convenient for travel and daily life.
What are the side effects of the Wegovy pill?
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting — similar to the injection. The OASIS 4 trial confirmed the safety profile is comparable to previous semaglutide trials. Discuss potential side effects with your doctor.
